"Faking It", an installation by Samantha J. Smith, is a lighthearted play on the state of American consumerism. The West's desire for luxury consumer goods has led to a rampant and very lucrative counterfeit production industry in the East. Illegal replicas of designer sunglasses, Swiss watches and European luxury handbags can be found in the Chinatowns of most major cities. "Faking It" showcases some of the most expensive and commonly counterfeited handbag silhouettes as actual size replicas. This time, however, the designer handbags are all made from the same cheap, utilitarian recycled fabric as the shopping bags used by the immigrant Chinese women who sell the counterfeits to make a living. "Faking it" was shown at Superpower, a group exhibition at 197 Grand Street, NYC during 3-15 April 2006.
